The FLOWS WP2 (Work Package no.2) national reports have focused on the main features of the local production systems framing the employment opportunities for women in the cities considered in the present research. The aim of this report is to describe both some general patterns and some peculiarities emerging from the comparative analysis, deepening some key factors and impacts. The report is organised in various main sections. Section one describes the urban economic pattern of development, with a focus on how the competitiveness of the urban economy is entangled with the female participation into the labour market. In particular, it analyses the effects of the shift towards a service-based economy and how it has affected both the availability and the quality of employment opportunities for women. Section two specifically describes the effects of section one with a special focus on different types of employment and work contracts. Section three is devoted to the patterns of horizontal and vertical gender segregation in selected cities, paying a special attention to some of its consequences in terms of gender pay gap. Section four deals with some impacts of the economic-financial crisis on female and male employment. Section five analyses some of the problems that trade unions face in selected cities in promoting equal opportunities in terms of gender. Section six deals with the future research agenda in relation to the study of local production systems in selected cities.
